Identity theft is a crime where personal information, such as your social security number (SSN), is used to commit fraud. The thief can use the information to apply for credit, file taxes, or get medical services. There are steps you can take to protect yourself from identity theft, including:
- Protect your SSN. Keep your card in a secure location, and only give your SSN to others when absolutely necessary.
- Store personal information in a safe place, both at home and at work.
- Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal information (like your birthdate or SSN). Citizens State Bank will never call you to verify your account information. If you receive such a request, please ask for the caller’s name and call them back at 888-529-5450. (If they give you a different phone number, don't use it.)
- Monitor your credit reports to ensure accuracy. AnnualCreditReport.com or 877-322-8228

- Enroll in the “Do Not Call” registry. www.donotcall.gov or 888-382-1222
- Shred receipts, expired credit cards, account statements, pay stubs, etc.
- Install firewall, virus detection, and anti-spyware software on your computer system.
- Create complex passwords, using uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers.
- Change your passwords frequently, and don’t keep a written copy by your computer.
- If you use Wi-Fi, be sure to password-protect your router. Do not use Wi-Fi to transmit personal information.
- Close online accounts you no longer use.
